Attorney Charles Bruno questioned whether construction of a Sikh gurdwara in Plainfield Township would be as strong if the developer were of another religion Tuesday night as the township zoning hearing board heard 3½ hours of testimony.

Bruno suggested the 100 people in attendance might oppose the religious temple because its occupants will be Sikhs.

Bruno represents Laura Coffield, who has reached an agreement to sell 7.4 acres at 5829 Sullivan Trail to the developer for construction of the gurdwara.

"If this church was a church of the denomination here, maybe we wouldn't have such a turnout," Bruno said in his closing statement.

Residents, however, said their concerns were with the plans, not the religion.
