On January 4, 2003 the Contra Costa Times reported that "two of Central Contra Costa County's biggest mosques have launched ambitious expansion plans and are considering joining a third mosque to form a unified, major worship center serving the region's booming Muslim population... The Islamic Center of Contra Costa on Clayton Road plans to buy a 2,500 square-foot former carpet store adjacent to its present location, which would more than double the 200-member congregation's worship space... Steady growth in the congregations' numbers during the 1990s mirrored the trend among Muslim populations in the Bay Area and around the nation. For example, the Bay Area Pakistani community, which is largely Muslim, has increased by more than 70 percent since 1990, census numbers show. The area's Afghan community is the biggest in the nation with an estimated 45,000 people... That growing presence has drawn some unwelcome attention, especially after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks when two teenagers shattered the front window of the Clayton Road mosque, an incident that city officials labeled a hate crime."
