Leawood Mayor Peggy Dunn reminded guests at the second annual Table of Faiths Celebration on Tuesday of her city’s racially exclusive history and said Leawood has come a long way.
Today, the city has become a diverse and inclusive city, she said.
“With the valued help of the Interfaith Council we will continue those efforts,” Dunn said.
The awards luncheon at the Westin Crown Center hotel was put on by the Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council, a group that works to promote education about all religious traditions in Kansas City.
“It was a great opportunity for over 700 people to participate and experience diversity in our interfaith community,” said Mahnaz Shabbir, one of the event organizers.
Before lunch, leaders of the 15 religions represented in the council each said a prayer representing their faith. The religions were American Indian spirituality, Bahai, Buddhism, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Paganism, Sikhism, Orthodox, Sufism, Unitarian Universalism, Vedantism and Zoroastrianism.
