On April 23, 2005 Agence France-Presse reported, "Chinese police are renewing a crackdown on the outlawed spiritual group Falungong ahead of the sixth anniversary of a huge protest in central Beijing opposing the government's persecution of the group, police and rights groups said.

'The state has decided that Falungong is a reactionary organization or an evil cult, so any activities linked to Falungong are illegal,' a Beijing public security official told AFP.

'Handing out Falungong leaflets or holding Falungong banners or other related actions are illegal. Anyone with these kinds of materials will be investigated.'

The statement comes ahead of the anniversary of an April 25, 1999, Falungong protest involving some 10,000 members of the spiritual group who encircled the Communist Party's leadership compound of Zhongnanhai in central Beijing.

The protests failed."
