Government Announces Rehabilitation Plan for Victims of 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

On July 22, 2006 the Press Trust of India reported, "Uttar Pradesh government has announced a rehabilitation package for the victims of 1984 Sikh riots in the light of the recommendations of the Nanavati Commission. Ex-gratia relief would be distributed among the riot victims under the package, official sources said on Saturday. Those who were victims of the riots and were present in Uttar Pradesh at the time of the rioting would be eligible to receive relief under the scheme, they said. The deceased would be given Rs three lakh each while those suffering permanent disability would be getting Rs 1.25 lakh, the sources said. Those who had migrated from the state in the wake of the riots would be provided Rs two lakh each, they added."
