On November 24, 2001, The New York Times reported that Governor-elect of New Jersey James E. McGreevey "greeted Muslim worshipers today after a Ramadan prayer service at a large mosque here, offering a message that carefully avoided divisive political issues related to the Middle East. During his brief visit to the mosque, the Islamic Society of Central Jersey, Mr. McGreevey's hosts, pointedly reminded him of their concerns about the... Arab-Americans who have been detained for questioning by federal authorities in the months since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks...But Mr. McGreevey focused his remarks on the spirit of Ramadan."
