On May 17, 2006 Georgetown University Office of Communications reported, "Recent world affairs have prompted an increased demand for professionals and scholars with advanced knowledge of Arabic and expert knowledge of Islam. In response, Georgetown University has launched a new degree program leading to a Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Studies. "Georgetown's strengths in Arabic language as well as the history, culture, religion and society of the Muslim world make this new program an obvious addition to our academic offerings," said Georgetown University Provost and Professor of Classics James J. O'Donnell. "I am confident that the new Ph.D. in Islamic Studies will prepare future academics, professionals and leaders to rigorously tackle the critical issues facing the Muslim world today." Drawing on Georgetown's unparalleled resources for study of the Islamic world through the Department of Arabic, the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, and the Departments of History, Theology and Government, the new Ph.D. program will prepare students not only for scholarly careers in academia, but also to meet a rapidly growing demand in both the public and private sectors for those with expert knowledge of the language and culture of the Islamic world. The inaugural class will begin in fall 2007 and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through February 2007."
