On March 17, 2004 The Fresno Bee reported, "Political, civic and religious leaders assured Fresno-area Sikhs at a Tuesday rally that hate crimes such as last weekend's defacing of a Fresno temple have no place in a diverse society. Contrary to graffiti scrawled at the Gurdwara Sahib temple on East Dakota Avenue warning Sikhs to go home, that it's not their country, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante called California one of the most diverse places on Earth. 'Hurtful words were written on a house of worship,' Bustamante told a noon gathering in the temple yard. 'We will not tolerate intolerance.' The congregation invited Bustamante to Fresno after three hate messages were used to deface the Sikh temple during the weekend. One of five Central Valley Sikh temples, Gurdwara Sahib faced similar vandalism last year, including a small arson fire."
