First Muslim-American Elected to Alabama State Legislature

On February 28, 2003 the Muslim Journal reported that "History was again made in Selma on Sun., Jan. 19, 2003, with the ceremonial swearing-in of Imam Yusuf Abdus-Salaam as the new Alabama House of Representative for District 67. Salaam becomes the first Muslim American to serve in the Alabama Legislature. The event began with an invocation given by ministers of all faiths... 'We are bringing people together,' he [Salaam] said. This was further demonstrated by Salaam as he sat on stage flanked on both sides by various religious leaders, from the Catholic faith, the Christian faith, the Jewish faith and the Protestant faith, as well as an array of political leaders... Salaam asked for the Bible, the Torah and the Qur'an. His wife held the books, while he placed one hand on them and took his oath. The gesture by Salaam to take an oath on all three books brought the crowd to their feet... "
