On November 15, 2002 The San Francisco Chronicle reported that "as a linebacker [for the San Francisco 49ers] Saleem Rasheed refrains from food and drink during the holy month of Ramadan, which began Nov. 6. For many others, observing Ramadan presents a challenge, and certainly sacrifice, but for a football player, different challenges arise. 'We were concerned about his health,' said linebackers coach Richard Smith. 'Without the ability to rehydrate before and after daylight practices, Rasheed could imperil his health. Even an intravenous injection of fluids is against his religion.' So far, Rasheed has yet to encounter health issues."
