On February 29, 2004 The Indianapolis Star published an editorial by Dennis Ryerson, editor of the Star. Ryerson wrote concerning a recent discussion about religion and the press he held with a group of 30 individuals including conservative evangelicals and moderate to liberal Methodists, Jews, Muslims, Catholics and Baptists. They asked that the Star remain a secular newspaper not advancing any religion, that the paper "do more to report about the impact of religions and faith on public and private issues -- from arts and culture to politics and sports --and vice versa," "encourage openness and a thorough debate of religious matters, " and, "in reporting about differences, take care to report about the common values shared by people of all faiths or, as it may be, by people with no religious affiliation."
