On January 8, 2000, the Los Angeles Times reported that more than 1200 Muslims gathered at the new King Fahd Mosque in Culver City, California. The mosque, which has only been open for four months, is a lavish, $8.1 million structure funded completely by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. The mosque, the fourth in Los Angeles, has already become a focal point for the more than 250,000 Muslims in Los Angeles County. There are about 75 Islamic centers in Southern California, mostly in former bank buildings and government properties, but there were only three mosques in Los Angeles that were built from scratch.
