This year, Eid-al-Fitr was commemorated at the White House. An American Muslim Council press release reported that on January 10, 2000, "President Clinton today commemorated the end of Ramadan with American Muslims at the White House. This year's Eid-al-Fitr celebration at the White House marks the first time that an American president in office has met with leaders of the American Muslim community. The White House has held an annual Eid celebration, hosted by First Lady Hillary Clinton, since 1996, when the first such event was co-hosted by the American Muslim Council. Eid is the Islamic holiday marking the conclusion of Ramadan, the month of fasting and spiritual renewal. In his remarks to American Muslims, President Clinton spoke of Ramadan as a "gift of Islam" in reminding all people "of our shared obligation to aid those who live with poverty and suffering." He noted that Islam is "now practiced by one of every four people on earth" but that there are "still too many Americans who know too little about Islam."
