Public outcry over an anti-Islam film “Fitna” and the ensuing boycott of Dutch products could strain bilateral business and economic relations, said the Netherlands’ ambassador to Malaysia Lody Embrechts.

It was futile to victimise Dutch companies for an individual’s actions, he told The Edge in a telephone interview. “It is one man’s opinion on Islam and it has nothing to do with Dutch companies in Malaysia.”

Embrechts said he was hopeful that the tension would dissipate, lest it harms business-economic ties between the two countries.

“We don’t want the bilateral economic relationship between the Netherlands and Malaysia to suffer. We can’t deny there will be repercussions if this thing (boycott) really takes off,” he said.
