On May 10, 2005 The Argus reported, "for each of the past eight seasons, the Fremont Healthy Start youth-advocacy program has allowed 100 or so underprivileged Fremont kids to play organized, competitive soccer for free. But, because of dwindling donations, it looked as though there would be no such privileges for those low-income kids this fall. That is when Fremont's Sikh community came through. A hefty donation of more than $4,500, combined with the regular annual contributions from the host Fremont Youth Soccer League and many parents, will allow 100 needy kids to play for free — with coaching, equipment and uniforms provided. The deadline to sign up is 4 p.m. Wednesday. Low-income children between the ages of 6 and 16 who live in Fremont are eligible for the program. Eighty-two kids were signed up as of Monday afternoon."
