The shops and restaurants in Vancouver's Punjabi Market are laying out tables this week covered with candles, fireworks, sweets and saris to prepare for the popular festival of Diwali on Friday.
Marked by street signs in both the English and Punjabi languages, the three blocks of stores near Main and 49th Street are heavily devoted to serving the roughly one out of eight Metro Vancouver residents with ethnic roots in countries such as India, Nepal, Fiji and Sri Lanka.
