On October 7, 2003 El Diario reported that "New York City welcomed thousands of immigrants who arrived from different parts of the United States on October 4 along with the Freedom Ride, a group advocating for a reform of immigration laws. " The event in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens was supported by the Cardinal of New York, Edward Egan, and the recently installed Bishop of Brooklyn, Nicholas DiMarzio. Cardinal Egan expressed his support to the demonstrators' cause and said that these "immigrants are children of God." He added that "this is a situation that we can't ignore, because too many of our brothers are being unjustly hurt. It's time to roll up our sleeves and work together to defend undocumented workers.”
