On October 27, 2003 Rocky Mountain News reported that "religious leaders bestowed prayers upon Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and his family Sunday at the city's first interfaith service for a recently minted mayor. The Very Reverend Peter Eaton, dean and rector of Saint John's Episcopal Cathedral, organized the service after a similar event honoring a retiring Mayor Wellington Webb proved successful. About 70 people attended the service at Saint John's on Sunday. 'I'm hoping over time it will catch on,' Eaton said. Hickenlooper, resembling a groom in a receiving line before and after the service, said 'faith and trust' were the key tenets of the words spoken. He said it was profound to hear from the three Abrahamic traditions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. 'They are all aligned with a common vision and a common purpose,' said Hickenlooper, who was raised Episcopalian and whose wife, Helen Thorpe, is a Quaker. 'It's all about peace and creating a solid future.'"
