The Constitutional Court of Belarus has rejected a 50,000-signature petition calling for liberal amendments to the 2002 Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations, BelaPAN said.

The court said in a written comment that it is authorized to look at the legality of a law only at the request of the head of state or other government officials, not individuals.

It said that the campaigners should ask the government or the head of state to initiate such a hearing.

Syarhey Lukanin, a spokesman for the campaigners and a member of an embattled Protestant community called New Life Church, said that the Constitutional Court may put forward proposals for amendments to regulations and this had been what the campaigners had asked it about.
