Community Mourns the Death of Gurpreet Singh

On July 14, 2003 the Contra Costa Times reported that "there was a memorial service at the El Sobrante Sikh temple for Gurpreet Singh, 23, of Hercules, who was shot to death in Richmond July 2 at the wheel of his taxi, and for his wife-to-be, Amandeep Kaur, who shot herself the following day in the Punjab state of India... Several West County officials came to the temple Sunday afternoon in support of the Sikh community, pledging to fight hate crime and to solve Gurpreet Singh's slaying and another shooting of a taxi driver in Richmond three days later... Pinole Mayor Maria Alegria, San Pablo City Councilwoman Genoveva Calloway, the Rev. Andre Shumake of North Richmond Missionary Baptist Church and Sikh temple co-founder J.P. Singh also spoke."
