On January 17, 2004 The Plain Dealer reported, "The embattled imam of the area's largest mosque received an outpouring of support Friday from mosque members, Muslim groups and Christian clergy. More than 200 members of the Islamic Center of Cleveland gathered at the mosque community center after afternoon prayers to rally behind Fawaz Damra, who was indicted this week on a charge that he lied on immigration forms. The Cleveland chapter of the Muslim American Society issued a statement calling on area Muslims to unite behind Damra, saying he should be presumed innocent. Jad Humeidan, executive director of the Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the Damra case "is part of a pattern of attacking the Muslim community, its leaders and its institutions."
