As he translated the words of Punjabi speakers unable to communicate in English, Abbotsford city councillor Moe Gill may not have been aware he was part of a historic occasion on Monday night.

However, a public hearing to debate the merits of Abbotsford’s fourth Sikh temple was considered just that by a number of speakers from different religions who provided a united voice in supporting the proposal.

All but one of the 11 speakers who addressed council during the hearing backed the temple proposed by the Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Society, which will be established at 31631 South Fraser Way.

After hearing such overwhelming support, council unanimously voted in favour of the application.

The temple will be located in the building which formally housed the Fraserway RV Centre, on a 2.5 acre site at the corner of South Fraser Way and Peardonville Road. Only minor modifications will be made to the existing property, which will hold approximately 300 people.
