On February 11, 2004 The Mercury News reported that "inner peace won out over silent slumber in Mountain View on Tuesday night, as the city council gave Zen Buddhists the right to open a proposed meditation center at 5:30 a.m. -- a little too early for neighbors who fret their sleep will be disturbed by revving car engines and slamming doors. About 30 members of the Kannon Do Meditation Center traded hugs outside the council chambers, celebrating their right to a traditional predawn ritual when the new center is built at 1972 Rock St... Residents on the 1900 block of Rock Street live in a row of condominiums and apartments, where they say street parking is scarce enough without a meditation center in their midst."
