A local politician said he was insulted by a Chinese government request urging him to ignore two Chinese New Year celebrations produced by a television company sympathetic to the Falun Gong.
Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairman Chris Norby received a letter from China's consulate general in Los Angeles that stated the ``Chinese New Year Spectacular,'' produced by New Tang Dynasty Television, aimed to ``preach Falun Gong fallacies.''
``Its ulterior motive is to defame China's image in the international community and undermine the development of U.S.-China relations,'' the consulate said in the Dec. 17 letter.
The Falun Gong is a spiritual movement outlawed by the Chinese government in 1999. Followers say members have been persecuted in China.
