Tomorrow, on what is expected to be the busiest travel day of the year, Pittsburgh International Airport seems like the last place to find some peace and quiet.

But savvy travelers know where to find their inner calm: the airport chapel, tucked away on the mezzanine level of the airside terminal.

"There are busy travelers and (airport) employees who are unaware the chapel exists," said the Rev. Jack Fitzgerald, chaplain of the Pittsburgh International Airport Chapel. "They are missing out on what could be one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating times of their hectic days."

One of more than 40 interfaith airport religious sanctuaries in the United States, the chapel is painted with warm, welcoming colors, and features tinted windows, an altar, a standing cross, a pulpit and rows of chairs for the congregation.

Fitzgerald presides at a 30-minute Roman Catholic Mass at 10 a.m. every day of the week except Saturday. The short service is tailored to meet the needs of workers and travelers with little time. He also offers confession and blessings, and is available to meet with workers or travelers who want to talk.
