DES MOINES, Iowa -- The first mosque built by Muslims in the U.S. is located in Iowa.
It's called the Mother Mosque of America and was built in 1934 in Cedar Rapids.
Residents are working to restore the mosque that is used as a cultural center, a library and a place of worship.
In the late 1800s, Cedar Rapids had its first influx of immigrants from a region that is now Lebanon.
A small but active Islamic population continues to exist there.
