On July 7, 2004 Zogby International reported, "According to a Le Moyne College/Zogby International survey that will be released today, 44 percent of American Catholics support Bush for president while 39 percent support Kerry. Since fall 2001, Bush's approval rating has declined from 78 percent to 44 percent among Catholics, the survey found. 'Kerry is not reaping a huge benefit among Catholics from Bush's decline,'said William Barnett, a Le Moyne College religious studies professor who works on the poll. 'Kerry has begun to speak out more on religion and how he views Catholicism,' Barnett said. 'Whether that is able to reassure Catholic voters is his major question.' The findings are part of the sixth Contemporary Catholic Trends survey, which started in fall 2001 and is believed to be the only longitudinal study of American Catholics' views on church and public policy."
