On May 26, 2003 the Appeal-Democrat reported that "the [Punjabi American Heritage Festival at the Yuba-Sutter {CA} Fairgrounds] drew thousands of people, who either sat on the ground in the shade or stood under the trees listening to music. The Punjabi-American Heritage Society organized the event... Event-goers wandered among the vendors' displays and ate at food booths that served everything from traditional Indian food to pizza and turkey burgers... The Sept. 11, 2001, attacks heightened awareness for Punjabis, many of whom belong to the Sikh faith. The festival gave them a chance to share with the community about their culture, Kang said... 'Yuba-Sutter is the perfect example of tolerance,' [Dr. Jasbir] Kang said. There were no reports of racial attacks on the Sikhs in Yuba-Sutter following the 9/11 attacks, like what occurred in other parts of the country."
