On April 13, 2000, the Daily News of New York published an article on the efforts of the Bukharian Jewish community in Queens, NY to keep their youth educated about Bukharian culture. More than 40,000 residents in the Rego Park and Forest Hills sections of Queens are Bukharian Jews. Bukhara is a former state in southwest Asia, now part of Uzbekistan. The YMCA in Forest Hills is sponsoring a weekly program called Chaverim Bukharian Teen Lounge, which is designed to be a safe place for teenage Bukharian Jews to hang out with each other and learn about their culture. The program is sponsored by the Jewish Child Care association, the New York Association of New Americans, and the Central Queens YM-YWHA. Aron Aronov, a community liaison with the New York Association of New Americans, stated: "We drink Bukharian tea, we eat Bukharian food, we dance Bukharian folk dances...We strongly believe in successfully integrating without losing our ethnic identity."
