On April 29, 2005 The Forward reported, "the Jewish community of Boston has been gaining ground on The Big Apple. New Yorkers may think of their city as the center of all things Jewish in America, but Boston-area institutions have been shifting the balance of power. In recent years, several new national initiatives have taken shape in Boston with local institutions assuming increasingly national profiles. Most recently, New York philanthropist Michael Steinhardt entrusted Brandeis University, located in suburban Boston, with a $12 million gift to establish a major new center for Jewish demographic studies."
