Nampa’s mayor says the city has no plans to duplicate the Boise City Council move to begin a meeting with what is probably the first Hindu prayer to ever open official business for the city’s government.
The Boise City Council meeting on June 8 will begin with a prayer by Rajan Zed, the same Hindu leader who opened a U.S. Senate session with a Hindu prayer in 2007. Zed will read from Sanskrit scriptures at the meeting set for 6 p.m. at Boise City Hall.
A secretary at Boise City Hall said Zed requested to deliver the invocation and his request was approved by Boise city administrators.
“The city of Boise is pleased to welcome representatives from all faiths to perform invocations at its city council meetings,” Boise spokesman Adam Park said in a statement. “Boise has a diverse population practicing many different religions; it’s important that our city government reflect and support that diversity.”
