On April 15, 2005 Beliefnet/RNS reported, "Mayor Michael Bloomberg distanced himself Friday from a left-leaning political activist accused of once saying Jews 'function as mass murderers of people of color.' Jewish leaders had called on Bloomberg to denounce Lenora Fulani - an awkward position for the mayor as he courts the support of the Independence Party in his bid for re-election this year. Fulani is a member of the Independence Party's state Executive Committee. 'I find these remarks phenomenally offensive. I couldn't disagree more,' Bloomberg said on WABC-AM about the comment the Anti-Defamation League says Fulani made in 1995. He urged members of the Independence Party to 'stand up and say so as well.' The Independence Party, which backed Bloomberg when he first ran for mayor, was created in 1994 as an offshoot of Ross Perot's Reform Party that aimed its message at disgruntled independent voters."
