On January 7, 2006 BBC News reported, "A mosque has been burgled and then deliberately set on fire. Emergency crews were called to Birmingham Central Mosque in the early hours of Saturday after smoke was seen billowing from the building.

The mosque, in the Highgate area of the city, was empty at the time and no one has been injured.

Damage to the building is said to be confined to an office. West Midlands Police say an investigation is now under way.

Divisional fire officer Bill Gough said crews arrived at the scene within three minutes."
