Faculty and students at Burlington High School celebrated a wide array of cultural and religious diversity during the school’s annual Holiday Traditions program on Dec. 23.

Pam Eaton, a special education teacher who helped start the BHS Multi-cultural Club 17 years ago, is the backbone behind this event which unites the different religions and cultural traditions of students under one umbrella.

“It allows us to celebrate Christmas and still be politically correct because we open it up to anybody from any background and any religion,” said Eaton. “It has grown every year and includes any holiday from any nationality or religion.”

This year, more than 25 tables were set up in the school’s cafeterias, allowing students and faculty to peruse the colorful displays during the first three class periods of the day.

Many students were dressed in the traditional clothing from their native countries, such as a choli, or dress and aurta-pajama, a suit for men worn in India.

Some displays included mouth-watering treats to sample such as Greek kourabiethas, butter cookies covered with powdered sugar, baklava, Indian samosa, triangle-shaped potatoes, peas and carrots fried in dough, French buche de noel, a log-shaped cake made with chocolate and chestnuts, Jewish potato latkes, charoset a mixture of apples, nuts, spices and wine, and Japanese soba noodles and tempura fried shrimp and vegetables.
