On August 4, 2002 the Mercury News reported that "almost 11 months after his brother was killed in... a post-Sept. 11 hate crime, taxi driver Sukhpal Singh was shot dead... in San Francisco... There's no evidence Singh's killing was a hate crime, police say... But no reasoning could comfort his family members in Arizona, where Singh's brother was gunned down Sept. 15... The slaying of Singh's brother, Balbir Singh Sodhi, prompted India's prime minister to ask President Bush to ensure the safety of America's Sikhs... Machinist Frank Roque, has been charged in the killing [of Balbir in September], and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Authorities say Roque was bent on revenge for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks."
