It's been more than a year since seven Baha'i leaders were imprisoned in Iran.

Attention was drawn to their plight at a meeting Friday night sponsored by the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Spartanburg. The event, held at the Spartanburg County Headquarters Library, was to raise awareness about the persecution of Baha'is in Iran.

About 15 attendees watched video presentations and prayed for the jailed Baha'i leaders.

"The authorities will not let them acquire legal service. They have recently said that the seven will be tried for treason, which is punishable by death," Phyllis Porter-Gudger said at the meeting.

Attendees were asked to help the seven by "praying for their safety" and writing to congressmen, urging them to support resolutions before the U.S. House and Senate.
