Halifax’s Baha’i community opened its first cemetery in Halifax Regional Municipality this month with a quiet service in the Dartmouth Memorial Gardens on Main Street.
"Release yourself, O nightingales of God, from the thorns and brambles of wretchedness and misery, and wing your flight to the rose-garden of unfading splendour," said John Chesley, quoting Baha’i founder Baha’u’llah, as he led prayers in the cemetery’s Garden of Serenity.
The small Baha’i section, with space for about 100 plots, sits on a wooded hill in the back corner of the burial grounds.
Chesley, secretary of the local Spiritual Assembly, said it has been a long-term goal of the Baha’i community to get a cemetery in HRM. The only other Baha’i burial ground in Nova Scotia is in Windsor.
