On December 5, 2004 Reuters reported, "Indian authorities sealed off the flashpoint town of Ayodhya on Sunday to prevent a rally by Hindu hardliners to mark the demolition of a mosque 12 years ago that sparked nationwide riots between Hindus and Muslims. Hundreds of soldiers stood guard at the disputed site in northern Ayodhya where Hindu zealots destroyed the 16th century Babri mosque in a campaign to build a temple to god-king Ram there, which they believe to be his birthplace."
