On September 4, 2002 the Tallahassee Democrat reported that "the man charged with ramming his pickup truck into the front of a local mosque in March will remain in federal custody, a federal magistrate judge ruled Tuesday. Charles Franklin, 41, was ordered held pending trial set for the week of Oct. 15, records show. He has pleaded not guilty. The U.S. Attorney's Office has charged him with violating a federal hate crime law that prohibits damaging religious property. If convicted, Franklin faces up to 20 years' imprisonment."
