On September 27, 2001, The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reported that "members of a local mosque recently told city leaders...[that] Muslims can no longer afford to be a quiet, secluded minority." Some area Muslims fear for their safety; "many women stayed home from Friday prayer services after the [terror] attacks, and the mosque suspended Sunday religion classes for children." Despite fears, "local Muslims want to reach out to the community and let them know that mosque members are good citizens."
