HAMILTON - As she prepared to decorate a small box with Haitian designs, Hamilton-Wenham High School junior Kelly Hendrickson turned to an art book rather than a stack of nearby paints.

"I'm actually hoping to pursue art in college, and a lot of my inspiration comes from different cultures and backgrounds," she said.

A youth crafts workshop at the Hamilton-Wenham Public Library was an opportunity for her to get creative. The program is a part of an ongoing theme at the library in anticipation of author Tracy Kidder's visit on March 21 to talk about his book "Mountains Beyond Mountains." It's a true story about a doctor who set up a free health clinic in Haiti and was promoted through the library's Community Reads program.

"All things Haitians are going on at the library," young adult librarian Michele Augeri said.

Youths were encouraged to read the book "Taste of Salt," a fictional account of Haiti's political upheaval in the 1990s.
