On May 4, 2004 The Japan Times ran a feature article on the Rev. Claudia Genung, pastor of West Tokyo Union Church in Mitaka: "From the San Francisco Bay area, Claudia first came to Japan in 1976 right after high school on an International Christian Youth Exchange...The couple [Genung and her Japanese-born husband, Toshi Yamamoto] studied for their masters of divinity at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. Later ordained, they then served at different churches in Hawaii, enjoying the multiracial, multicultural social mix. 'Growing up, my mother affirmed people from different backgrounds and religions,' [she said.] 'I too believe we can learn from everyone.' Leapfrogging the years and now Mom to Kai Gabriel (12) and Koh Michael (9), she is somehow finding time to study for a doctorate in global feminist studies through the San Francisco Theological Seminary...Claudia is also the editor of the biannual Japan Christian Activity News. There is no subject it does not meet head-on with courage, conviction and (whenever possible) direct action -- comfort women, child pornography, Japanese prisons, 'burakumin,' the homeless, Japan's foreign migrants, domestic abuse, security issues."
