On December 11, 2003 The American Jewish Committee issued a press release that reported, "The American Jewish Committee today condemned the despicable attack on a Jewish cemetery at Auschwitz, where 16 gravestones were toppled and a wall was smeared with swastikas. 'The assault on Jewish dead is one of the vilest acts of anti-Semitism imaginable,' said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. 'Tragically, it is yet another example of a wave of attacks on Jewish cemeteries, not to mention other Jewish targets, across Europe. The world should remember: anti-Semitism may begin with Jews, but it is a cancer which left unchecked infects and ultimately kills democratic societies.' AJC expressed hope that the Polish government would do everything possible to apprehend those responsible and assure sufficient security measures to help thwart further incidents."
