History: This Methodist congregation began in Cambridgeport in 1835, meeting in a private home. In 1842, the congregation built a church at 239 Harvard Street near Central Square. In 1867, a mission society of the Harvard Street congregation established a church in "Old Cambridge" near Harvard Square. The latter was named the Epworth Church after the English town where John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, was born. The present building, a combination of Romanesque and Victorian Gothic architectural styles, was built for the Epworth Church with the substantial help of Cambridge philanthropist Frederick Rindge, and dedicated in 1893. In the 1940s, the original Harvard Street congregation merged with this church's congregation to become the Harvard-Epworth Church.
Description: The church has an active and committed membership and is involved in both student ministry and community outreach.
