On Saturday June 9, 2007 the Islamic Society of Boston (ISB) and the Muslim American Society (MAS) organized a day-long celebration surrounding the capping of the minaret at the ISB Mosque and Cultural Center in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Over two thousand people attended, both Muslims and supporting community members, to celebrate a return to construction after the settlement of lawsuits that had stalled the project for more than two years. The main events of the day included a "Faith and Unity March" from Malcolm X Park to the mosque, the capping ceremony, and the first call to prayer from the capped minaret.
The capping of the minaret was an important milestone for the twenty years of work done on this momentous project to create the largest Islamic educational, cultural, and religious center in New England. Those who have been involved in its development believe its size and diverse facilities will offer the Boston Muslim community a valuable resource as a school, mosque, and community center. As such the mosque and cultural center serve as a symbol of unity for the diverse populations of Muslims in Greater Boston and as a collective testament to the capacity of their community to contribute to the greater cultural diversity and interfaith activity of the Boston area.
