History
Swami Satprakashananda, who also founded the Vedanta Society of St. Louis in 1938, founded the Vedanta Society of Kansas City, Missouri, in 1947. The oldest Vedanta Society in the United States, founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1894, is in New York City. There are fifteen centers in the United States.Leadership
The current spiritual teacher for the Vedanta Society of Kansas City is Swami Chetanananda. He teaches primarily at the Vedanta Society of St. Louis and visits Kansas City about eight weeks per year.
Thirty years prior to moving to their current center in 1985, Vedantists of Kansas City met in private homes. The center they currently use is a converted private residence. The sanctuary is a small living room where members attend lectures, usually provided on videotape. There is also a meditation room.
Activities and Schedule
Activities at the center include vesper services, retreats (meditations, Vedic chants, class, supper), public lectures, Sunday services, Karma yoga, and interfaith symposiums.
