Dr. Michael Born, the former president, and Martha Mann, the current president of the Boston Chapter of the Religion Communicators Council (RCC) submitted this information.
The Religion Communicators Council is the oldest public relations organization in the United States. The RCC is an interfaith organization whose mission is to assist its members in communicating within their own faith groups and to the broader secular society through the media and through their own communications. The Boston Chapter of RCC is one of 12 active chapters of this 600-member national interfaith association of professionals in the fields of print and electronic communications, marketing and public relations. Through interaction within and among religious groups and the media, RCC facilitates important networking, relationship building, and the communication of faith-based values to society. Members of the Boston chapter of RCC represent a great diversity of faith groups: Christian Science, Church of Scientology, Roman Catholic, Baha’i, Episcopal, Lutheran, Unitarian Universalist, ISKCON (Hare Krishna), Methodist, Baptist, and other Evangelicals.
The RCC’s Boston Chapter meets on a regular basis from September through June and offers programs designed to help communicators increase their professional expertise, establish important contacts with area media representatives, and generally expand their resources. Examples of programs include a panel discussion with the religion editors of the principal Boston-area print publications (i.e. Boston Globe, Boston Herald, The Phoenix); how to bring traffic to one’s website; how to tap into the recent boom in spirituality literature; and “field trips” to area radio and TV stations, including the network affiliates.
Nationally, RCC holds an annual convention that features awards ceremonies that recognize achievements of excellence in communications, both in the faith-based and secular media. The prestigious Wilbur Awards have honored, among many, the Pulitzer Prize winning Boston Globe reporter Michael Paulson for his breaking coverage of the clergy sex abuse stories in the Archdiocese of Boston. RCC also supports its members through an e-newsletter, Counselor. Information on membership and chapter meetings can be found on the website, www.religioncommunicators.org
