The Winchester Star
Mormons are known for their industriousness.
And the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Apple Pie Ridge Road in Frederick County is a constant whirlwind of activity.
“This is a busy place,” church member Mike Groll said on a recent weekday evening as he navigated the halls of the Winchester area’s only Mormon church.
Laughter emanated from a meeting of the Women’s Relief Society, a church group for women founded in 1840 which now has 5.5 million members worldwide.
The smell of freshly baked cupcakes wafted through the air.
Groups of men dressed in dark suits and crisp white dress shirts chatted amiably in the corridors.
The sound of children’s voices filled the gymnasium.
Local Mormons have gathered here for nearly a half-century to worship and socialize.
The congregation has grown so large that plans have been made for a second chapel. It will be built on Justice Drive off U.S. 522 in Frederick County. Construction is expected to begin within the year.
